Hickory Run State Park is located in the western part of the Pocono Mountains.  It expands almost 16,000 acres.  There are more than 40 miles of hiking trails, along with three state park natural areas.  It is home to the boulder field, which is a National Natural Landmark.

Where To Stay

There is a wide range of options when visiting this state park.  These options range from camping all the way to resorts.  The Hickory Run State Park campground offers tent camping, RV camping, and cottages.  Some amenities here include an amphitheater, disc golf, pavilions, playground, beach, and campstore.  If you are looking for something a little cozier check out the many Airbnb accommodations located in the Poconos.  We have stayed at two different locations when visiting the area.  Both had great accommodations that included hot tubs!  Here are the links to those places:  Lake Front Cabin and Townhouse.

Hiking

We utilize AllTrails before heading out on our hikes. It is a great way to see the difficulty of hikes and you can grab directions that will take you right to the trailhead.

Shades of Death Trail

Shades of Death is a 2.2 mile trail with a 282 ft elevation gain.  This is a relatively easy hike along a stream with some beautiful waterfalls.  You will walk through rhododendron thickets and see various rock formations.  You will find parking at both ends of the trail.  There is a visitor center located at one end that has restrooms.

Hawk Falls Trail

Hawk Falls is a 1.4 mile trail with a 137 ft elevation gain.  It is also a relatively easy hike. It is best to get there early as it can become fairly crowded.  Follow the blazes and you will cross Hawk Run via a bridge.  Further along you will reach Hawk Falls which are about 25 feet high.

Hickory Run Boulder Field

The Boulder Field spans 16 acres.  It is definitely worth checking this National Natural Landmark out.  The trail is 6.9 miles with an elevation gain of 534 ft.  You can also drive a one-way loop to access the Boulder Field.  The Hickory Run Boulder Field was formed by intense climate conditions during the ice age.  The rocks here are mostly sandstone.

Where To Eat

If you are looking for a fantastic breakfast place, I highly recommend Moyer’s Country Kitchen!!  It is about 25 minutes away from Hickory Run State Park, but well worth the drive.  They are famous for their German pancakes.  Absolutely stay away from Chat & Chew.  It was the worst breakfast we have ever had.  I’m not sure how they have a 4.6 star review on Google.  For dinner, we went to Boulder View Tavern.  To be safe, I would make reservations here.  It was packed, but luckily we found 2 seats at the bar.  Food, drinks, and service were all great!

Hickory Run State Park is located in the Pocono Mountains.  You won’t be short of things to do while in the area.  There is something for everyone!  Check out my article on Jim Thorpe for another great place to visit while you are in the area.
