A Peaceful Weekend Camping at Kettle Creek State Park

If your ideal camping weekend includes quiet mornings, mountain views, time on the water, and plenty of opportunities to slow down, Kettle Creek State Park deserves a spot on your Pennsylvania camping bucket list.

Tucked into the mountains of north-central Pennsylvania, Kettle Creek State Park feels wonderfully removed from the busier parts of the state. With campsites surrounded by forest, access to the 167-acre Kettle Creek Reservoir, hiking trails, fishing, and plenty of room to simply relax, it makes an excellent destination for a laid-back weekend outdoors.

We recently spent a weekend camping at Kettle Creek State Park, and it was exactly the kind of getaway that reminds you that a camping trip doesn’t need a packed itinerary to be memorable.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan your own weekend camping at Kettle Creek State Park, including things to do, paddle boarding, and a couple of campground quirks you’ll definitely want to know before you go.

Where Is Kettle Creek State Park?

Kettle Creek State Park is located in Clinton County in north-central Pennsylvania, surrounded by the mountainous scenery of the Pennsylvania Wilds.

The park encompasses nearly 1,800 acres and sits along Kettle Creek and the Kettle Creek Reservoir. Its relatively remote location is a big part of its appeal. This isn’t the kind of state park where you’ll find a busy tourist town right outside the entrance. Instead, expect forests, mountains, water, wildlife, and plenty of quiet.

For campers looking to unplug for a weekend, that’s exactly the point.

Camping at Kettle Creek State Park

Kettle Creek State Park has two camping areas: the Lower Campground and Upper Campground.

Depending on your site and camping setup, you’ll find options for tents, trailers, and RVs. The campground gives you easy access to many of the park’s outdoor activities while still providing the classic wooded Pennsylvania camping experience.

One of my favorite parts of camping here was simply having time to slow down. Bring a hammock, grab the book you’ve been meaning to read, and give yourself permission to spend an hour, or three, doing absolutely nothing.

Sometimes that’s the best camping activity of all.

Things to Do at Kettle Creek State Park

You could easily spend an entire weekend relaxing at your campsite, but there are plenty of ways to explore the park when you’re ready for an adventure.

Go Paddle boarding on Kettle Creek Reservoir

If you have a paddle board, bring it with you.

The Kettle Creek Reservoir is a beautiful place to get out on the water, especially during calmer parts of the day. Paddle boarding gives you a completely different perspective of the surrounding mountains and forest.

An early morning paddle is especially worth considering. The water tends to be quieter, the temperatures are cooler, and there’s something incredibly peaceful about starting your day surrounded by the mountains.

Kayaking and canoeing are also great options if paddle boarding isn’t your thing.

Tip: Pennsylvania boating regulations apply, so make sure your paddle board or other watercraft has any required launch permit or registration before your trip.

Explore the Hiking Trails

No Pennsylvania state park weekend is complete without spending at least a little time on the trails.

Kettle Creek State Park offers hiking opportunities ranging from shorter walks to more challenging routes through the surrounding mountains. Even if you aren’t looking for a strenuous hike, getting away from the campground and exploring the forest is worth adding to your weekend.

Pack plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, and don’t forget the bug spray!

Go Fishing

Kettle Creek is well known for trout fishing, while the reservoir provides additional fishing opportunities.

Even if you’re not an avid angler, sitting along the water with a fishing pole is another great excuse to embrace the slower pace of a weekend here.

Make sure you have the appropriate Pennsylvania fishing license before casting a line.

Relax at Your Campsite

Don’t feel like every hour of your camping trip needs an activity.

One of the best things about Kettle Creek State Park is that it’s a great place to simply be outside.

Hang a hammock. Read a book. Make coffee at camp. Sit around the fire. Play cards. Take an afternoon nap. Walk around the campground.

Some of my favorite camping memories aren’t from the big hikes or attractions, they’re the quiet moments in between.

A Simple Weekend Itinerary for Kettle Creek State Park

If you’re visiting for two nights, you can keep your itinerary relaxed while still experiencing plenty of what the park has to offer.

Friday: Arrive & Settle Into Camp

After arriving, get your campsite set up and take some time to explore your surroundings.

Once camp is ready, keep your first evening simple. Make dinner, walk around the campground, and enjoy a campfire as the sun goes down.

There’s no need to rush into activities. You’re in the mountains for the weekend.  Settle in and enjoy it.

Saturday: Paddle, Explore & Relax

Start Saturday morning with breakfast and coffee at your campsite before heading to the reservoir.

If conditions are calm, this is a great time to take your paddle board out on Kettle Creek Reservoir. Spend the morning paddling and enjoying the views before heading back to camp for lunch.

In the afternoon, choose a hiking trail or simply spend a few hours relaxing in a hammock with a good book.

Finish the day with dinner around the campfire and, if the sky is clear, some stargazing.

Sunday: One Last Slow Morning

There’s something bittersweet about the final morning of a camping trip.

Instead of immediately packing everything up, give yourself a little time to enjoy it.

Make breakfast. Have another cup of coffee. Take a short walk or sit by the water before breaking down camp and heading home.

A slow Sunday morning is the perfect ending to a weekend at Kettle Creek.

Things to Know Before Camping at Kettle Creek State Park

There are a couple of things I wish every camper knew before arriving, especially the first one!

1. Bring Bug Spray — the Black Flies Bite!

Do not forget the bug spray.

The black flies at Kettle Creek can be relentless, and yes, they will bite you.

Having insect repellent available made spending time outside much more comfortable. I’d keep it somewhere easily accessible rather than buried at the bottom of your camping gear.

If you’re visiting during a particularly buggy time of year, you may also want lightweight long sleeves and pants for mornings and evenings.

Consider bug spray an essential item for your Kettle Creek State Park packing list.

2. The Campground Showers Take Some Getting Used To

Here’s another detail that’s helpful to know before your first shower.

The campground uses water-saving showers that require you to hold the knob in for the water to continue running.

It’s certainly effective at conserving water, but it can make washing your hair a little more interesting!

If you have longer or thicker hair, be prepared for a bit of multitasking. You’ll essentially need to keep one hand on the shower control while rinsing with the other.

It’s not a deal breaker by any means, just one of those campground quirks that’s much easier when you know about it ahead of time.

What to Pack for a Weekend at Kettle Creek State Park

In addition to your normal camping gear, a few items are especially useful for this trip:

Why Kettle Creek State Park Is Worth a Weekend Trip

Kettle Creek State Park isn’t about checking off a long list of must-see attractions.

That’s part of what makes it special.

It’s the kind of place where you can wake up surrounded by mountains, paddle across a quiet reservoir, spend an afternoon reading in a hammock, cook dinner outside, and end your evening around a campfire.

For anyone looking for a quieter Pennsylvania state park camping getaway, Kettle Creek offers the perfect combination of outdoor adventure and relaxation.

Kettle Creek State Park is a beautiful place to spend a weekend enjoying the outdoors and another Pennsylvania state park that’s well worth exploring.
